Tenants at a San Rafael apartment building have received letters encouraging them to voluntarily relocate, raising concerns about gentrification in the Canal neighborhood. An unknown number of residents living at the Meridian, a 99-apartment building at 400 Canal St., received the letter from the owner of the building. 'We are writing this letter to inform you of management's plans to substantially remodel your unit in coming months,' one such letter reads. 'To protect the health and safety of our tenants in connection with the substantial nature of the renovations taking place in the unit, it is required that your unit be vacant as defined by California Civil Code 1946.
